Chalfont St Peter 0 Oxhey Jets 1
Cherry Red Combined Counties Division One
12th October 2024
Three more points on the road in a local Derby pushed Jets up another place. Still, an absolute referee blunder nearly cost Jets dearly as so often when officials foul up, they dish out the power trip cards trying to cover their being found out, and for Jets, it put us down to ten men with a sin bin, another yellow and two yellows for the bench, all because the Chalfont full back at full stretch hands the ball off the goal line and two of the officials somehow don’t see it. The third says he saw it clearly but does not feel he can say anything as it is not in his segment !!
Jets, yes, good points and a wins a win, but continuously letting teams stay in the match after long periods of total domination is becoming a bad habit.
The Jets truly dominated the first half. They had two big chances in the first four minutes that were put over the bar. The youngest player on the pitch was dominating, as Patrick Brander tore up the wing, presenting chances but not taking them.
The problem with having all the ball to no rewards can lead to a sucker, and it almost did as a complete breakaway left the Jets stretched. The forward 1:1 and incredibly brave goalkeeping kept jets level and immediately reversed the thread, releasing Jets on the attack. Elliot Harris did some great work on the left before crossing. Patrick Brander took control of the ball, cut in across the box and unleashed an excellent shot for what turned out to be the winner. Jets kept up the balance of play but were left pondering how it was only one at the break.
As often happens, the side revamped, CSP changed formation, the notorious slow second-half starters did it again, and the home side got on top of the Jets. Changes were made as Jets staff sensed the problem, and some balance was restored, but not to the possession heights of the first half.
Then the scramble Owen Ayres denied by the keeper, and it was shots going everywhere. Then, with the ball going in the net, the defender’s outstretched arms stopped it for a bolt-on easy pen and red card, but it was Jets down to ten men thanks to a sin bin as the referee dished out a card like Christmas trying to cover his mess.
Jets got the points but could not contain their anger at the ridiculous few minutes that almost changed the day.
The Carlsberg man of the match. James Kimber got his almost auto nomination as his faultless form continued. Patrick was unbelievable in the first half but well-marked second, but the stand-out clear winner was Archie Sykes, who had an excellent match.
After the dreadful start to the season, the Jets have four wins on the bounce as they start stabilising and kick-start their season.
