Bedfont 3 Oxhey Jets 2
Cherry Red Combined Counties Division One
14th September 2024
Jets started so brightly and, with the contrast to the monsoon on Tuesday night, Jets were actually landing so we hoped we could improve on our recent run of results.
There was much hope as Jets pushed forward early and all but camped in Bedfont’s area. Then, however, in a rare attack on the Jets goal the ball looked comfortable but an error and an own goal put Jets a goal down (21 mins).
Jets were rocked and you could see the confidence drain. We looked a little shaky for a while but no further damage was done and we completed the first half still a goal down.
The second half started like the first. It was Jets looking to get something, but again a defensive error, being caught in possession in the penalty area, allowed the hosts to double their advantage (65 mins).
Jets pushed hard to get back into the match.Debutant Michael Kelly scored and added zip to the attack.
Jets management responded by throwing on two debutants, and one of them was Michael Kelly who made an instant impact attacking the home defence at pace. Jets were now taking the match to their opponents at speed, and that paid off when Kelly burst down the outside, outstripped the defence and slotted to bring Jets back into the game 2-1 (75 mins).
Liam Osborne levels for Jets.
Jets were now a different team flowing forward and the home side, picking up desperate yellows, were holding on. Then from another scramble Liam Osborne slotted 2-2 for the centre half’s first goal for the club (2-2 84 mins)
Now it was Jets streaming forward and Kelly almost did it again, just getting around the keeper but a slight touch denying where maybe an experienced player might have gone down, but the youngster went for it and the chance was scrambled away.
Kelly continued to trouble the defence and might have gone down for a penalty.
For Jets lately, stoppage time has been cruel and for the second time in just four days a Jets own goal was to cost the match, a defender’s head diverted the ball into the net for the winner, and despite all efforts nothing to show for it.
Late penalty appeal for a foul on David Lopes.
Jets are falling into trouble, and commitment all around needs to be increased but the biggest thing needed is a break from Lady Luck. You make your own luck and the table doesn’t lie, but at the moment what’s happening feels so cruel.
