Jets Off The Pace
Oxhey Jets 1 Staines & Lammas 4
3rd August 2024
Combined Counties Division One
Jets had no answer for Staines Lammas who were making their Combined Counties debut after coming up from the Sussex County League as they looked to climb back to their former heights as Staines Town.
Jets had eight debuts and five Senior football debuts for youngsters coming from youth football and before anyone says “You can’t win with kids” it has to be said that some of the more senior lads need to admit if they are season ready too, as Jets were outrun and out thought throughout.
Jets fell behind early when Daniel Bamba finished a flowing move that young Jets did not respond to.
Jets had a good period then and George Davey, Blake Argent and Andre Lopes came close and Blake Argent was only being denied by a goal-line clearance with the keeper beaten.
Lady Luck did not smile on Jets then as a soft penalty was awarded and debutant keeper Rex Cannon got a hand to it and turned it onto the post but it rolled along the line post to post for penalty taker Josh Hooks to tap in.
The first goal in the second half was going to be critical and unfortunately for us, it came quick (48 min) again by Hooks and effectively ended the contest.
On 57 min it became 0-4 but credit to Jets who now had thrown all 5 subs on and another 16-year-old Dylan Roberts was on hand to turn in his first goal in senior football.
In honesty, it was simply not up to the level, holiday season and players returning are in Jets’ hopes to ride the storm, but a big step up is needed all around.
Man of the match went to another young debutant Tom Reid.
