Jets ended a bleak run to the new season with a very efficient 1-4 away win at Staines Lammas on a blistering hot, dusty pitch.
Changes again made boss Tom Inch have a sleepless night. Still, the new shirt holders did him proud with a first-half display that literally blew the hosts away, and the star of the show was hat-trick hero Dominic Mosca, returning from illness and taking up the goal-scoring mantle again he’s held for two seasons. An eight-minute hat-trick, I’m reliably informed, isn’t our fastest. Tim Omara holds that record with a six-minute one, he was quick to put on record, but no one minds as Mosca’s goal-scoring show all but clinched the much-needed points early for Jets.
Jets played some flowing football from the off, and it was Dominic himself who was brought down for the opening slot and penalty that he got to his feet and hammered home- no splutters, no stop and start. Just old-fashioned net buster! 0-1 (27 mins).
You could sense the relief, and a pinpoint cross from debutant Alexander More was the perfect assist for Dominic to head home at the back post 0-2 (23 mins)
Jets from the restart won the ball back and charged at the hosts, and in a frantic shot fest and clearances off the line, Dom popped up and blasted home from a tight angle to complete his hat-trick 0-3 (25 mins)
Staines were shocked, and Jets kept it going, while the hosts did incredibly well to stay at the score till the break with ten men due to a sin bin.
The second half was to be a three-man show: home side, away side and a referee who decided to throw cards about for everything except breaking wind. Luckily for us, the home side suffered more with multiple yellows and a Red and Sin bin, and that was Jets’ chance to really go for broke. Still, unfortunately, Alexander More slightly tarnished his excellent debut, joining the sin bin Q as things on the pitch got a bit farcical.
Another red and a bench card for the hosts were interrupted by a disputed penalty that brought Staines some hope, but in another long scramble and relentless pressure after a ten-minute wobble by Jets Paulie Schuster took Jets clear and a happy drive home.
New signings Nicholas Brayshaw and Alexander More really steadied Jets, who, to a man, stood up to the task today, with young Austin Ayres contributing an incredible save at 1-3 to stop Staines getting right back in it, and of course the card-giving show was unsettling both teams to limit any damage.
There was no discussion for the Carlsberg man of the match; Dom Mosca was out on his own.
The ridiculous league programme takes a break next week with Irchester visiting us in the FA Vase.
