Matas Strikes Last Kick Winner For Jets

A last kick winner is stoppage time for Jets, eased, but did not mask the horrendous form Jets have been in over the last seven days. Decimated by injuries and some dubious commitments, so many of the under-18s have stepped up to the job, and three more made a big difference yesterday.

Confident display in goal from Austin Ayres on his debut.
Jets’ first forty-five was worse than the last two games, which didn’t seem possible given the wayward passes and lethargic effort often witnessed at clubs at season’s end, and it brought the deserved “talking too” from the staff at the break, as the patience shown to the generally young team had run out.

Late in the second half, it was all Jets looking for the winner.
The second half was much better by comparison, and Jets came out of the shadows to be the game chasers, but the introduction of the young substitutes proved the real turning point as Jets chased the points. Missing every natural forward in the club this week, seeing where goals can come from has been a puzzle, and today was the same as Jets: the final ten minutes in particular were a constant scramble in the box, but dogged defending in numbers blocked Jets out.

Matas Jankauskas (hidden) breaks the deadlock

Matas turns to celebrate as his shot hits the net
Then, deep into stoppage time, one telling ball opened the line for young Matas Jankauskas to break clear and, with amazing maturity for his age, slot past the keeper for the game.

Happy Jets celebrate the last-minute goal from Matas
It was not quite a snatch, as following the “chat” there was an evident second-half improvement, but it does not mask the three horror performances this week.

On the bright side, an outrageous save by debutant Austin Ayres, called up from the A team, and a very confident performance earned the youngster the Carlsberg Man of the Match award and was a major reason for the win.
