Comfortable Start to Cup Campaign
Stony Stratford 0 Jets 4
Challenge Cup Round 1
03 September 2011For the third week running Jets found themselves making another long trip, this time to Stony Stratford Town, in the first round of the Challenge Cup, for the first week of the season unaffected by any festivals, so injuries apart, Jets travelled with a fairly strong team.
With "Town" playing in the league below, Jets didn't know exactly what to expect from today's opposition, so it was important that Jets started strongly, for the first few minutes the game was a little frenzied with Town trying hard to make their mark on the game, but for all their eagerness Jets never allowed them too push home any attacks, with the Jets defence easily able to deal with Towns efforts. After about 8mins Jets started to get the ball down and keep some good possession moving the ball smartly, and pushing onto the Town defence, on the 14th min with Town struggling to keep the evermore prominent Jets attacks at bay a well worked moved saw the ball laid back for the on rushing Mike(My legs are tight) McRoberts, who despite the subs screaming "no not him" buried the ball low in the corner of the net, great strike from about 20yds, it was obvious from his celebrations that, 1. he never expected it to go in and 2. he hasn't scored many.
From this point on Jets were in total control, stretching the Town defence at will, on the 16th min saw Paul Danslow one on one with the rushing keeper, who saved the chip effort only to see Jordan Bennifer collect the rebound and calmly walk the ball home 0-2.For the rest of the half Jets controlled the game at ease, and should have scored more, it took until the 40th min for the tally to be added too, Matty Collins making a good run and passing to Owen Deamer who cutting in from the right, beat three Town defenders before slotting past he keeper. 0-3
The second half saw Town upping there efforts and made a valiant attempt at raising their game but Jets were too strong despite easing off on there own game, early substitutions were made seeing Matty Collins being replaced by Lewis Cook and Chris Killer replacing Mike McRoberts whose legs were...........tight.On the 58th min saw Paul Danslow getting on the end of through ball and rounding the keeper to make it 0-4, the game played out without any further goals.
It was on the whole a fairly comfortable win, which with better application could have seen Jets get more goals, some down too poor finishing and some down to bad decisions in front of goal, hopefully this will change in the coming weeks when we face stronger challenges.
On a cautionary note one third of Jets entire medical budget is being spent on Mike McRoberts tight legs, a scenario that cannot be maintained, in an attempt to lessen this burden an approach to Boots the chemist is being made on the off chance that they may sponsor this bright but somewhat tight legged youngster.
