Another cup and another home fixture for the Jets, as they aim their sights on Sawbridgeworth in the second round of the Floodlight Cup in a mid week encounter. Having hit five goals in beating Cuffley the previous Saturday, could the Jets repeat that form in this fixture?
From the kick off the Jets staged a performance that was what is considered their best of the season, so far as they gave an outstanding display of short one touch football which was to prove a sharp shock for the Sawbridgeworth squad, as in the 2nd minute the Jets attack entered the Sawbridgeworth box, a scuffle developed and it was Dean Seabrook who was on hand to put the ball away and give the Jets the start that they were looking for.
Sawbridgeworth were given no time to settle as the Jets continued their fine football and in the 12th minute the lead was extended as they were awarded a corner, and as the ball entered the box John Danslow the Jets captain was to give the keeper no chance and the Jets were now 2-0 up.
Sawbridgeworth were now digging in, and pushed forward in numbers to regain some sort of foothold in the game. In the 25th minute they were awarded a free kick some thirty yards out, on the left. The kick produced a thundering shot, which this time saw Steve Duce in the Jets goal out of reach and the score advanced to 2-1.
The Jets continued to play with confidence and appeared determined to extend their lead further, and in the 38th minute some fine play between Ben Chandler and Dean Seabrook was to find an inch perfect cross from the left find Adam Lowton to beat the keeper and the Jets were creeping closer to that five goal form at 3-1.
Once again the Sawbridgeworth attack were to push into the Jets area and in the 43rd minute a high ball entered the Jets box and a close range shot which appeared to be goal bound was to produce a fine save from Steve Duce and to bring the break.
The second half found no change in the Jets play, but this was to see Sawbridgeworth enjoy their brightest period of the game. The Jets made their first substitution, which was to see Ian Holdom enter the show. In the 72nd minute the Jets fired a ball into the Sawbridgeworth box and found shot after shot after shot bounce out from the wall of bodies, but as the ball made it’s third exit, it was Ian Holdom who was at hand to make the final shot count with a powerful shot in the net and the score was now standing at 4-1
Just two minutes later that five goal form was reached, as in the 74th minute a long high ball by the Jets found Adam Lowton in a almost empty third of the field and with just the keeper advancing on a one to one, a side step found him clear to slot the ball into the net, and the score once again was showing 5-1 for the Jets.
The Sawbridgeworth tackling became reckless and one such produced an injury to Ben Chandler which saw the Jets second substitute Tyler Connor enter the fray, the Sawbridgeworth side reduced to ten men now were playing in desperation, which did pay off in the 78th minute as a high ball was to enter the Jets net and the score became 5-2, but time was not on the Sawbridgeworth side and the reckless play continued with just minutes to play, yet another red card was to see them reduced to nine men, but all was lost and the Jets could count this a fine days work completed.
