Bright Start from Jets

Royston Town 1 Jets 3

Spartan Reserves Division One
5th September 2009

It was the meeting of last season’s Division 1 Champions and Division 2 East Champions at Royston Town on Saturday. Jets went up there missing 8 regular players from last season’s Championship winning side, whilst giving full league debuts to 3 players: Grant Hamilton, Stephen King & 16 year old Matty Deamer.

Jets started the game quite well, but on 8 minutes we got caught out by a long ball and Royston went 1 up. Jets came back into the game and had some nice passages of play, Michael Bishop, Owen Deamer & Matty Deamer playing some nice one touch football, all showing quick feet on the ball. From one of these passages of play in the 17th minute the midfield got the ball to Lee Armitt, who took on 3 players before passing the ball to Adam Lowton who calmly slotted in past the Keeper.

Jets really started to push on and were in complete control and it paid off again on 27 minutes with Armitt again the provider playing a nice through ball for Adam Lowton to get on the end of, and lob the Keeper, 2-1 to Jets. The score stayed this way till half time, but Lowton did have the ball in the net 2 more times but both ruled out for offside.

The 2nd Half started and it was clear that Royston were fired up by their manager at half time. Royston come out the better team but Jets were still dangerous on the break with the pace of Armitt and Lowton. Midway through the half Tyler Connor picked up a slight strain to his hamstring and Club legend Gary Page came on for him, causing Jets to have a shuffle around with Adam Lowton dropping to centre midfield with Page now partnering Armitt up front.

Jets were hanging on to this game and we were helped by some woeful finishing by Royston who missed 2 great chances from inside the 6 yard box by heading over. Royston broke through again and only an outstanding tackle from Michael Wyatt stopped another great chance for them.

It was on 82 minutes that we scored again, from a Royston Corner. Matty Deamer cleared the ball from the front post and the ball found its way to Lowton who played the long ball over the square Royston defence for Lee Armitt to run onto and smash the ball past the Keeper. At 3-1 up captain Carl Wigg was to come off for another player to make his debut, Joao Ribiero.

Final result was 3-1, in a game where every player played really well and showed great team spirit. Man of the Match went to Adam Lowton, not only for his 2 goals and assist to Armitt but also for his all round work rate.
