Jets Leave it Late

Holmer Green 1 Jets 1

Spartan Reserves Division One
9th February 2010

A bitterly cold evening and the threat of snow for a mid week away fixture was what the Jets faced as they made the trip to Holmer Green for a league encounter. It developed into an evening of one hic up after another. As the kick off time grew nearer there was one person missing, that person being the referee. A replacement referee was conjured up by the Holmer Green management, but would mean a late start of approx fifteen minutes.

The warm up period was greeted by a sprinkling of snow, but finally the game was started. The Holmer Green squad wasted no time as they advanced into the Jets area in the third minute and saw a shot rebound off the Jets post, and luckily did not fall to the opponents feet, but was scrambled clear by the defence.

The next evening episode occurred just a minute later when the floodlights failed throwing the ground into total darkness, which lasted approx fifteen minutes before the play was able to go on.

With lights now working it would appear that it was not only the lights that had been recharged, but the Holmer Green team with just five minutes of fresh play in the 24th minute they advanced on the left and send a low volley into the Jets net to open the score for the evening at 1-0.

The half continued with both sides giving no quarter as chances from both went begging, the Holmer Green keeper making some fine saves to hold his side’s one goal advantage to the break.

The second half started with the game now running some thirty minutes later than schedule. The Jets appeared to take control and were once again to see shots on target foiled by the Holmer Green keeper. As the half ground on the sands of time were running out for the Jets and the goal lead was looking more and more like a result,, but in the 81st minute the Jets were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Holmer Green area, and a well struck ball was to find the head of Anthony Shepherd to send the ball well out of reach of the so far unbeaten keeper and bring the score level at 1-1

The last ten minutes found the Jets defence under pressure as the Holmer Green attacks became ever frequent as they searched to regain the lead, but it was not to be as the Jets held tight at the back, and the game ended with honours even and to bring this comedy of errors to an end.
