Last Minute Killer from Armitt

Harpenden Town 0 Jets 1

Spartan Reserves Division One
12th September 2009

Oxhey Jets Travelled to Harpenden Town for our second game of the season, confidence was high from last week’s great win at Royston.

Jets started the game well, but couldn’t string too many passes together due to the pitch. And with that Jets started to play straight into Harpenden’s hands, we reverted to long aimless balls for the forwards to chase. The pace of Lowton and Armitt looked like they were going to cause Town’s defence trouble, but with the ball going over their head more than to their feet Harpenden were getting the ball back.

Our best and only real chance of the first half came to Adam Lowton, after some fine play by Chris Killer done the left wing, Killer managed to whip a cross in, which Lowton beat the keeper to but the ball bounced narrowly wide of the goal. Harpenden had a few decent chances and should have gone one up through a long ball out of defence, a free header for the striker to flick on and some indecision in the Jets defence allowed the Harpenden number 10 to race through, round Grant Hamilton and with an open goal hit the post.

Then again Harpenden won a free kick and this time it was the number 9 who put a free header from inside the six yard box wide. This big Harpenden side were starting to look more threatening from corners and free kicks but the half drew to a close and the game was still 0-0.

The second half started and continued just as the first half had, but Harpenden started to get on top of the game a bit now and winning the midfield battle, on 55 minutes young Matty Deamer was brought off for Andrew Lomas to make his return to the club after being away at University.

Harpenden had a few half chances and the left midfielder was starting to get into the game more and more and cause us quite a few problems. With 20 Minutes to go Owen Deamer and Jamie Prouton came off to make way for Gary Page and Ryan Murray, who was making his debut for the club.

The game was mainly controlled by Jets now, and Harpenden looked to counter attack us. With 10 minutes remaining Armitt did have the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside. So, into the last minute we went and it looked like a draw was on the cards, until Lee Armitt latched on to a through ball and managed to lob the keeper, the ball bounced and rolled into the bottom corner of the goal. Final result 0-1.

Man of the match went to Chris Killer, who worked so hard for the team up and down the left.
