Armitt Rocket Clinches Win

AFC Dunstable 1 Jets 2

Spartan Reserves Challenge Trophy
5th December 2009

Once again the Jets take to the road as they make the long away trip to AFC Dunstable for yet another early kick off at 1.30pm in the Challenge Trophy.

The fixture started with a flurry of action for the Jets when in the 2nd minute the ball was to be sent out onto the right where John Danslow, who took advantage of making a strike on goal, collected it although being some twenty-five yards out. He delivered a high, but powerful shot which was to soar over the keeper and into the net, and the Jets were ahead at 0-1.

Dunstable immediately applied pressure on the Jets as they pushed forward in numbers. In the 10th minute they were awarded a corner kick on the left which saw the ball enter a very crowded Jets six yard box, and produce a scramble which would crown any rugby fixture, but in the effort to bring the ball clear it was the unfortunate John Danslow who was to push the ball into the net, so with not a helping hand, but a helping foot Dunstable were level at 1-1.

From then on the Jets appeared to struggle against a side, which were, could be said were faster in most sections. Once again the Jets finishing deserted them and passes were sent astray, but there was no further changes to be made as the break was reached.

The second half was to see an improved Jets side as they started to play the short passing football that was asked of them, and in the 52nd minute a long ball out to the left was to find Lee Armitt, who advanced to the edge of the Dunstable area before releasing a rocket of a shot into the net, and once again the Jets were ahead at 1-2.

The half continued as a hard battle, but once again the Jets determination came through and in the last five minutes Jets hearts were in their mouths as a Dunstable attack was to see another goal mouth scramble, which felt like an age before the ball was seen to come free for the Jets defence to clear it down field. A sigh of relief was given as the final whistle sounded to bring this very hard afternoon’s work to an end.
